This weekend I participated in a semi-annual [April and October] general conference given by my Church leaders. I wish I had been able to sit and soak up all of the wisdom and spiritually enriching talks that were shared. However, I have the audio in a podcast already [downloaded this morning], and by Thursday the English text will be available online at LDS.org.
And I have been listening to another podcast regularly, and picked up this quote from it:
"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."
-Abraham Lincoln
I am doing my best to continue to live frugally, keeping our monthly expenditures within our monthly earnings. We are down to 2 debts: our house [which is for sale, and will soon be paid], and one student loan [with thrift we'll get this paid off in another year]. I'm not seeing any fiscal responsibility happen at a state or national level, with our government, which means I will be voting against several incumbents this coming election.
Gratitude List:
* my parents and siblings
* friends and neighbors
* craft books- they are seducing me with their ideas, and I so want to make something!
* music
* warm, sunny weather today
* I went shopping Friday and found some really cute candy to put in my kids' easter baskets :)
* a beautiful story about Easter by Elder Holland
* my husband and sons
* taking time to meditate on my scriptures this morning.
